Courage, 30,000 BC

Archaeological Site: Pedra Furada, Parque Nacional Serra da Capavara. Hiding in a giant mimosa tree, Maru watches her father meet with the leader of a treacherous Andean tribe. Her father, furious that she followed him, tells her that if he’s killed on this diplomatic venture—something he fully expects—she must warn their people to flee. The people are prepared; Maru at age seven is not. Her father places heavy responsibility on her not only because she followed him, but also because he felt giving her responsibility would assure her safety. Courage, 30,000 BC is the story of a people who are utterly threatened, but who ultimately contribute from adversity some of the most amazing wall painting in the Americas.
